Let’s face it. Not everyone buys a sewing machine only for working on typical, basic sewing projects. Many have special sewing needs that they want the machine to fulfill, and one of the most common of them is quilting.
Quilting has a big place in the sewing world, but unfortunately, there don’t really seem to be an abundance of sewing machines specifically designed for quilting. The few you come across may turn out to be hit-or-miss.
But as with anything that has to do with sewing, if you’re lucky enough to have a sewing pro assisting you with your important sewing decisions, you will do just fine.
And given how tricky choosing the right sewing machine for quilting can be, I’ve worked hard to come up and review what I think are the best quilting sewing machines.
Best Quilting Sewing Machines

1. Singer 9960 Quilting Sewing Machine
I’m so impressed with the Singer 9960 that I’ve no hesitation in crowning it as the best sewing machine for quilting, unless you have a budget of well over $500 or some special sewing needs that it can’t meet. It has pretty much everything most sewers are ever going to need for their quilting tasks, but it actually goes well beyond that.
Let me make myself clear. It comes with a staggering 600 built-in stitches. Show me one other machine that does and is still priced under $500!
While the huge selection that consists of almost every type of stitch you can think of is one thing, the Singer 9960 also comes with a special selection of fonts that lets you personalize your projects the way you want to. How cool is that?
This huge stitch selection also includes 13 1-step buttonholes, with there also being a buttonhole underplate – a feature I’ve not found in any other sewing machine in this price range.
The stitching speed is fairly good at 850 stitches per minute. However, the huge variety of projects it can handle as well as its great efficiency doesn’t mean you will find yourself taking ages to learn how to use it. To your surprise, it’s as easy to use as it’s sophisticated, and you will find yourself sewing away on it within an hour of unpacking it.
To add to what I’m saying, there’s also an automatic needle threader; but it’s not what you usually see with other machines. It’s extremely fast and can thread the ENTIRE machine for you if you want, all in a few seconds.
But wait, there’s more to it! The 600 built-in stitches isn’t the only feature that makes it supremely versatile; there’s also the fact that it can sew just as smoothly on pretty much every material under the sun!
What’s more, this beast would have no problem sewing through as many as 4 layers of fabrics, which probably also makes it one of the most powerful computerized sewing machine money can buy.

Somehow, the 9960 also manages to include a plethora of great accessories, while still being one of the most affordable, feature-packed sewing machine for quilting out there.

2. Brother CS6000i Quilting Sewing Machine
First things first, the fact that the Brother CS6000i has managed to amass well over 7000 reviews (at the time of writing this) speaks volumes about its popularity. And there’s actually a good reason for it.
It’s one of the most value-packed sewing machine for quilters, and unless you’re looking for something very heavy-duty, it may end up surprising you with what it has to offer.
When the seller says the CS6000i is versatile, they really mean it. Despite its ridiculously cheap price, it’s very generous when it comes to the stitches and pressure foot variety. There are probably not many sewing or quilting projects you won’t be able to use it for, and that’s quite some versatility for a crazy low price.
However, it really takes the versatility to a whole new level with its unique feature that allows you to control the machine using your hand instead of the foot pedal. It helps you have great control when working on projects where you need to start and stop the sewing very frequently.
Further, there’s also the variable speed control, allowing you to choose the speed you need, instead of you having to go with the same speed for every project. Similarly, there’s a jam-proof drop-in bobbin function that makes the otherwise daunting task of accessing and winding your bobbin a breeze.
The LCD display is basic (what do you expect at this price?) but very functional, and will let you select the stitch length and width with great ease. As far as the feeding is concerned, it probably cannot get any smoother than it is with the CS6000i, at this price point.
Finally, the CS6000i is also amazingly lightweight. So much so that you can literally lift it with one finger. While that makes it super portable, it also means that you will have to be careful about not knocking it over when being busy sewing on it.

3. Brother XR3774 Sewing Machine for Quilting
The very first thing that impressed me about the Brother XR3774 as soon as I set my eyes on it was its extra-long working table. It’s something really surprising to find in a sewing machine with an unbelievably low price tag attached to it.
However, if you’re beginner and looking for something to use for many different but home-use quilting projects, the XR3774 is going to be just perfect for you. It’s very easy to use, comes with many useful features and offers enough versatility to allow you to work on even large-scale quilting projects, thanks to the extra-long table.
I really found the XR3774 to be much more than what you would expect at this measly price point. It boasts 37 built-in stitches, which also include many decorative stitches. There are as many as 74 stitch functions in total, as well as a one-size buttonhole that sews perfectly-sized buttonholes no matter the project you’re working on.
Despite being very functional and versatile, the XR3774 is as easy to use as some of the most basic sewing machines on the market. It has a built-in needle threader, drop-in bobbin function just like the other Brother sewing machine I reviewed above, as well as a cool LED area that makes the usual sewing or quilting easy and fun.
Furthermore, there are customers that had never sewed before buying the XR3774. However, within a month or two, they were sewing on this little sewing wonder as if they have been doing it since years.

4. Singer 4423 Heavy Duty Quilting Sewing Machine
If you’re looking for a heavy-duty sewing machine for quilting at an incredibly low price, the Singer 4423 has to be what you’re looking for. You don’t often get to see a sewing machine that comes with a heavy-duty metal frame at this price point. Its universally positive reviews pretty much sum up what I’m trying to say here.
Something worth noting here is that its “basic” looks are deceiving; it can sew like a beast and there’s probably no sewing project it can’t help you with. Be it the super stiff vinyl or the silky satin, the Singer 4423 would perform just as well.
Similarly, it sews effortlessly through fabrics that most other products in its price range would struggle with. This is all thanks to its powerful motor, which seems to boast about 60% more power than most of its competitors.

It has 23 built-in stitches and they cover a variety of projects, be it home décor or something based around one of those crazy fashion trends out there. And guess what? It does all that at an unbelievable speed of 1100 stitch per minute.
I’d really be surprised if you manage to find a heavy-duty sewing machine designed for quilting that can sew faster than the Singer 4423.
Now, as you can tell, I’ve been finding and reviewing sewing machines here on this blog that not only offer the best in terms of performance, features and overall value for money, but are also surprisingly easy to use for what they have to offer.
And the Singer 4423 is no exception. While it would always be willing to serve you no matter the type of project you’re working on – and at a speed that can save you loads of time when working on large projects – it comes with features that would allow even a total beginner to start using it to the fullest in a matter of a month or two.
There’s the automatic needle threader taking care of one of the most tedious and common sewing tasks ever, a super detailed manual telling you everything you need to know about using this little beast, and the fact that you can use it the same way you would use another basic, easy to use sewing machine.

The Brother HC1850 is an advanced, computerized sewing machine that offers more than what you may ever need for your sewing and quilting needs. It has a massive collection of 130 built-in stitches, including decorative stitches, stitches specifically designed for quilting (great for people looking for a machine for quilting projects), 8 different styles of buttonholes and many more.
There’s also a sewing font that allows for basic monogramming. The HC1850 is more than versatile enough for all projects that have to do with quilting, sewing, decorative stitching and even basic monogramming.
The HC1850 is also pretty sophisticated; sporting a detachable foot controller, as many as 8 specialty feet for different sewing tasks such as overcasting, blind hems, buttonholes and more. Similarly, it also boasts some impressive quilting-specific features like a detachable wide table, a collection of 14 unique quilting functions, as well as a quilting foot powered by spring function.
What’s more, you would also be able to use it for free-motion quilting, which is actually a pretty rare feature even if you’re willing to spend big bucks on your new sewing machine.
Another fact about the HC1850 I’d like to put some emphasis on is that while it comes with a variety of features and functions specifically designed for quilting, you can also do embroidery machine work on it. This increases its value quite a bit, as not many machines designed for quilting would allow you to use them for embroidery projects.
You also get a lot of versatility with the HC1850; I’m particularly impressed with its feature that allows you to choose between using the foot pedal and the controls. The controls can do everything you can with the foot pedal, but they also make it easier to control the speed.
